Circle expectations and proxy policy for Jean Paul III and Gilyan III

With there currently being up to 11 orders that could want to meet with the Crown in order to discuss candidates, and likely another one coming in the next few months, it is our desire to set forth our expectations so order meetings can proceed smoothly and efficiently. Especially so since we would like to meet with each order at least twice, if not three times.

Written proxies will be accepted until two days before the meeting. This will allow us the chance to read the proxies and reply with questions or clarifications. Proxies may be read in the meeting if more information or a clarification is needed by the Crown.

We will not limit ourselves to a certain percentage of positive opinions or a certain number of meetings to discuss a candidate. If we feel comfortable elevating a candidate with the information we receive from the order before and/or at the meeting, we will make that decision at that time. There is no reason to wait weeks or months for another meeting and more discussion on a candidate we find agreeable.

Candidates and topics for discussion should be submitted via email to the Crown (*trm@crown.ansteorra.org <trm@crown.ansteorra.org>*) at least a week before the meeting. The Crown will create the circle agenda, add approved persons to the agenda, and add any items or candidates that They want to discuss. The crown will publish that agenda to the order as soon as possible and in advance of the circle. If time allows at the end of the circle, additional candidates may be discussed ad-hoc.

If your response to a candidate is “not yet”, you must state the reason why you believe they are not ready now. Feelings or gut instincts are not adequate. Use your words and tell the circle what the candidate needs to improve before you will accept them as your peer. Comments of “They lack PLQs” will be met with a request from the Crown to have the list of qualities that need additional support or strengthening.

The Crown (to be) encourages the members of the various orders to discuss candidates amongst the other members prior to the start of the circle, so that concise and relevant counsel can be brought to the Crown.

We will work with you to enrich the lives of Her people. We will reward that which is freely given, By protecting you with our aid and giving you our love. Chivalry Fealty

As we head up to the beautiful lands of Aethelmearc for the Great Pennsic War, know that our thoughts are already turning towards Gulf Wars! We encourage all of our martial-inclined populace to start pulling out your weapons of war, stringing your bows, sharpening your axes, greasing your gears, and checking your tack. Armored, Rapier, Siege, Archery, and Equestrian leaders, we ask that you start scheduling war practices. Get everyone ready for the fields at Gulf Wars. But Gulf Wars is more than just martial activities! Ansteorra will need armies of Artisans and Service oriented folk to help make Gulf War more fun than a pack of puppies! Artisans can help not only by competing in Kingdom A&S, but also by creating banners and tabards for the kingdom and your groups so the Known World will know the diversity of Ansteorra as we march to the field. Ansteorra will need our service-inclined populace to organize the various musters, keep all the warriors hydrated and not 'hangry', and to volunteer to help the war run smoothly.

Now Announcing the Format for the November 2024 Queen’s Champion Tournament!

As announced in court at Academia della Spada, the format for my Queen’s Champion tournament will be Bedford Points.

Prepare to fight a lot as this tournament will last for 4-5 hours and will not have a set number of rounds. The tournament is planned to be outdoors, but I will make a decision that morning to move it indoors if I deem there are health or safety concerns.

HL Nicaize will be administering the list for me, so be on the lookout for additional information and pre-registration forms from her in the future.

Letters of Intent will not be required, but will be happily accepted if you would like to submit one.

I also hope (pun intended) to host the Guardian of the Queen’s Hope at Queen’s Champion. There will likewise be pre-registration for that tournament so we will have an idea of the age ranges, prizes, and scrolls we need to have available for the entrants.

Jean Paul and I invite and encourage any and all rapier fighters to enter Queen’s Champion tournament and showcase their fighting skills, endurance, and panache. The winner of the tournament will receive a prize commissioned by us from Darkwood Armory specifically for this tournament.

I will be choosing my Queen’s Champion from those fighting in the tournament. If you are unable or unwilling to accept the duties and responsibilities of my champion, simply tell the list coordinators when registering for the tournament. I will have a token that is visible from a distance to identify those fighters who are vying for the chance to be my champion.

My personal expectations of a champion include attending most of the events with me (including foreign wars, especially Gulf Wars), fighting as my champion upon the rapier field as needed (the Princess of Vindheim has already wagered a fat pig that her champion will beat all others!), and coordinating the assistance of stand-ins if they are not able to discharge the duties at a specific event. I expect my champion to be well-groomed, laugh at my jokes, and watch at least the first two episodes of My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic. There is also the more common expectation of a champion which is to become friend and confidant to the Queen while maintaining the respect, courtesy, and chivalry which the rapier fighters of Ansteorra are known for showing to their Queens.

To be clear, I will choose my champion from the people who enter the Queen’s Champion Tournament that have identified themselves as willing to take on the role. This person may also be the winner of the tournament. There should not be any reason that a fighter is unable to enter nor for them to resign from the tournament due to an inability or lack of desire to be my champion.

I welcome every authorized fighter to participate in my Queen’s Champion Tournament to the utmost of their health and abilities. I challenge the rapier community of Ansteorra to cause me to run out of fighter tokens and require me to resort to tearing the buttons and pearls from my dress so that everyone receives a token from my hands at my tournament.

King's Champion Format

Kings champion will be a 30 minute Bear Pit immediately following Namron Protectorate with at a minimum the following two weapon styles: 6 ft spear, and Fighter’s Choice. There will probably be more. The Crown will announce weapon format changes during the tournament and there will be no breaks during those weapon changes. Whoever can re-arm and get back on the field will gain an advantage. The Crown will attempt to not pick any weapon style so weird that fighters will not have weapons. The Crown will also make sure there are sufficient 6 ft spears to keep the lyst moving in an expeditious fashion. The crown will choose his champion from the contestants.

Expectations:
My personal expectations of a champion include attending most of the events with me (including foreign wars, especially Gulf Wars), fighting as my champion upon the armored field as needed, and coordinating the assistance of stand-ins if they are not able to discharge the duties at a specific event. I expect my champion to be well-groomed, laugh at my jokes, and listen to either the first book of He Who Fights with Monsters or Dungeon Crawler Carl. There is also the more common expectation of a champion which is to become a confidant to the King. A champion will be respectful, courteous, courageous, and chivalric in their demeanor.

Royal Hunter Format

Royal Hunter will be spread across three events, Vindheim Missile Academy, Shadowlands “A Toast to Absent Friends: A Día de los Muertos Event”, and Bordermarch War of the Rams. VMA and Shadowlands will be used as qualifying rounds, with a smaller qualifying round at War of the Rams. Six qualifiers each will come from VMA and Shadowlands, and a final four qualifiers from WotR.

The qualifying 16 persons will then participate in a double elimination direct shoot competition.

The final round will be a balloon shoot for the two participants with the lowest scores. Two colors of balloons will be attached to a target. Each finalist will be assigned a color. Whichever color has been shot from the target first will be the winner of the Royal Hunter Tournament.

Qualifying Rounds: The qualifying rounds will run during the entire weekend, event staffing permitted. Entrants must shoot 100 arrows, 5 arrows at a time at a 5 target board. The 5 targets will have two scoring rings, with the outer ring worth one point, and the inner circle worth two points. Each target can only have one scoring missile, so if more than one missile hits a target, the lowest scoring missile will be used. If there is a tie, a single “closest to center” shoot-off will be used.

Varying Weapons Styles: All typical bows and crossbows will be allowed in the Hunter Tournament. Crossbows may only score on the inner circle of the qualifying target.

October 06, 2024: Crown Tournament/ Namron Protectorate Thanks

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Barony of Namron, the event stewards, their staff, and Their Most Excellent Baronesses. Managing to put together such an incredible event with so many competing priorities is a testament to the populace of Namron, and the kingdom of Ansteorra.

We would also like to extend our profound gratitude to Their Grace's Sven and Antigone (newest holders of a Sable Crane for Royal Mentoring!), who were kind, courteous, thoughtful, and diligent with providing Us with all the information, resources, and training we need to do our best job as Crown of Ansteorra.

October 10, 2024: Now Announcing Ansteorra’s Gulf War Artisans!

Our kingdom is rich with accomplished artisans, but we are only allowed to choose seven to represent us at Gulf Wars. To all the other artisans who entered and displayed at Kingdom A&S, we encourage you to enter the Open A&S at Gulf Wars or take your art and teach others around the Known World about it on Artisans Row!

November 2024 Black Star

Greetings to our noble populace,
We would like to again thank the staff and populace of the Barony of Namron for figuring out how to accommodate the need for a different coronation date and merge our coronation with their excellent event. We know it will have gone splendidly. As we work through the coronation, we'd like to make all aware that we will be pretty much immediately departing for a long planned boat voyage from our southern coast, and will be hard to reach for a week or so. We leave confident that our Highnesses of Vindheim and our landed nobility, as well as our fine officers and seneschals, will keep all aspects of the kingdom running smoothly in our absence.
Prior to our departure, we finalized the Gulf Wars war point schedule with our noble cousins from Trimaris, Gleann Abhann, and Meridies. We have worked many hours with them to attempt to have a lot of fun at Gulf Wars, and bring more balance to the war points. We hope that everyone finds it as pleasurable as we will. We would like to extend our gratitude to Their Excellencies Daniel and Fionnghuala for the excellent stewardship of the Barony of the Eldern Hills. They pass a fine barony on to their successors, and the crown is much pleased with them.
As November hopefully reduces Ansteorra's summer's long grasp and high heat, we look forward to visiting our southern regions, and are excited to spend time in our Baronies of Bryn Gwlad and Bordermarch, as well as the Shires of Seawinds and Shadowlands. While the journey will be long, we know that the time will be well spent.
Finally, we want to remind all of us to have grace with our friends and family in Ansteorra. Please remember that all of us have our own burdens, worries, cares, fears, and obstacles. When you find yourself perhaps getting frustrated or cross with your friends, take a moment and remember to appreciate their journey, and have kindness for their struggles.

December 2024 Black Star

Greetings to our noble populace,
We did a lot of driving in November! Seawinds, Shadowlands, Bryn Gwlad, and Bordermarch are all almost as far as Gulf Wars for us! Luckily, we were able to see many happy faces at the end of each of those drives to make each of them worthy of the effort. It was truly a delight to see so much of the kingdom in the first few weeks of our reign.

Many thanks to all of those who are submitting award recommendations via the Ansteorra Management Portal (AMP)! It truly is a gargantuan improvement over the old system for the Crown. We are thankful for all the effort everyone has put into it. Duchess Antigone, the visionary; Master Martin, the coder; Baroness Kolfinna, the documentor; Lady Sofia, the tester; and all the others who have poked and tested and reported bugs and made suggestions and helped with code reviews. Every one of you has helped the kingdom and we appreciate all of you.

We would ask that everyone in the kingdom please create an account in AMP if you don’t have one already, and if you do have one make sure your name, OP link, and group data is up to date. It helps the crown immensely when that data is correct.

Tucker and Mazikeen would like to thank everyone who has welcomed them at events. They enjoy meeting new people and getting pets and snuggles. Even though we have often been busy at events, they have always been well taken care of and enjoyed their time.

December brings the tournaments to pick the next Prince and Princess of Vindheim, as well as the Prince and Princess of Ansteorra! We are very glad to have their help over the next few months as we continue to plan an exciting and fun Gulf Wars.

Finally, we want to remind all of us that there are many ways to have fun. Some enjoy spending time with their friends, some enjoy spending time alone. There is a reason why the SCA is full of many different things to do, and that’s because someone enjoys doing it! Ask others to share what is fun for them and maybe you can find new fun for you!

February 2025 Black Star

Greetings to our most generous populace,

We enjoyed a wonderful holiday season, and hope you enjoyed yours as well. With the holidays behind us, our outward focus is now going to be Gulf Wars! We have been working tirelessly with the royals of the other treaty kingdoms to plan additional war points, many to promote the skills of the missile community in the SCA, many more to expand the attention for our youth participants, rework some traditional martial war points, and update some of the combat conventions to align with current trends across the known world.

The new Ansteorra Management Portal (AMP) has continued to evolve and improve the behind-the-scenes management of many manual processes of the Crown and Kingdom officers. In version 1.2 (Wandering Warrants), the AMP team will rollout the Officer Warranting section, which we expect to dramatically improve the warranting process in Ansteorra - even to include automatic email notifications when an officer gets warranted! Our eternal gratitude to all of the developers, testers, listeners, and data entry people who have been serving the SCA from their computers. Thank you to everyone who has logged into AMP and submitted award recommendations to Us. To date, 459 recommendations have been written and read by Us, and We appreciate everyone who has spent time in commending your fellow Ansteorrans. Please do keep it up. Please do look around for the quieter and less notable members, and think of what they might be doing that is worth celebrating. We would ask that everyone in the kingdom please create an account in AMP if you don’t have one already, and if you do have one make sure your name, OP link, and group data is up to date. It helps the crown immensely when that information is correct.

March 14, 2025: Gulf Wars Release

With the weather at Gulf Wars looking to be dangerous early Saturday morning, the crown releases all populace from any duties to the kingdom or the crown for the rest of the War and encourages the populace who can to make a safe and timely departure from Gulf Wars.

The crown will still be attending the battles and closing ceremonies.

March 20, 2025: Gulf Wars Wrap Up

Ansteorra,

It has been our fondest wish to be Crown again at Gulf Wars. To see our kingdom shine on the fields of combat, the halls of artistry, and the fellowship of camps. We are delighted to say that you delivered!

What a truly glorious war. Ansteorra outserved, outfought, and out-everythinged any other kingdom there. While it’s true that a few war points might not have gone our way, the might of Ansteorra, with the strength of her allies, carried us through to a resounding tie (victory!). We are so proud.

We are very proud that our kingdom Worked so hard, Recruited so well, and Fought so vigorously.

We are proud that our kingdom was Hospitable; hosting activities in our Grand Tent every evening, and gracing many with s’mores, games, tacos, and cookies.

We are proud of our Artisans, who spent hours and hours working on their arts, and refining their displays and entrants.

We are proud of our Missileers, who created new championship tournaments out of nothing. They made fast, fun, and exciting competitions to test the mettle of champions in their area. The attending Royals were entertained and attentive throughout!

We are proud of our Combatants, who fought through heat and fatigue to secure many war points for their kingdom.

We are proud of all of you, and so phenomenally grateful that we got to go along with each of you on this wonderful Gulf Wars XXXIII.

Greetings to our noble populace,

To those of you who read these letters, we thank you for your time and attention. We know that many of you will be reading them on the ride home from Gulf Wars, although a large number of our kinsmen were not able to go this year, and we want you to know that you were missed.

Thank you to everyone, both those who went, and those who did not, for everything you did for the war, the equipment you made, the tabards, coifs, and all the other parts of war prep. Words of the Populace

During their Coronation day, Jean-Paul and Gilyan processed to each of the pavillions of the groups attending. The Shire of Brad Leah presented Their Majesties with these words:

A king and queen, their duties intertwined,
To rule with wisdom, justice, and with grace,
The realm they shield from danger, keep it kind,
And in times of need, they show a steadfast face.

To govern wisely, for the people's good,
To listen to counsel, and to weigh it well,
