Words of the Coronet

December 18, 2025: Facebook Post

Ansteorrans,

We are overwhelmed with joy and gratitude at the opportunity to be the next heirs to the Stellar Throne. This honor is humbling beyond words, and we accept it with full hearts, clear eyes, and a deep sense of responsibility.

This victory does not belong to us alone. It belongs to every fighter who tested us, every voice that offered counsel, every hand that steadied us, and every friend who believed—sometimes more fiercely than we did ourselves. You have shaped us, sharpened us, and carried us to this moment.

We swear to serve with courage, fairness, and love for this kingdom and its people. May our tenure be marked by listening before speaking, empathy before pride, and service above all else. We look forward to walking this path with you and to honoring the trust you have placed in us.

In love and service to Ansteorra,
Prince John and Princess Vittoria

February 2026 Black Star

From the Prince and Princess of Ansteorra
To the beloved populace of Ansteorra,

We take up the Coronet with gratitude, humility, and great joy, and we thank you for the trust you have placed in us. This Kingdom has shaped us through its people through courage shown upon the field, beauty wrought by skilled hands, wisdom shared in teaching, and service freely given.

Ansteorra is strong because its people care deeply, strive boldly, and lift one another higher. It is our earnest hope that all feel welcomed, valued, and inspired to pursue their passions, whether martial, artistic, scholarly, or service-driven. Walk with us in this time of shared purpose. Together, let us honor our traditions, celebrate one another’s achievements, and continue to build a Kingdom worthy of its people.

In service to Crown and Kingdom,
John Drake and Vittoria Maggiore
Prince and Princess of Ansteorra

April 2026 Black Star

Unto the beloved Populace of the Kingdom of Ansteorra, From John and Vittoria, Prince and Princess:

Greetings and our warmest regards.

As the season turns and the roads grow busy with banners and armor, our thoughts turn with great anticipation toward Gulf Wars. The gathering of so many of our people - fighters, artisans, teachers, and dreamers alike - is a reminder of the strength and beauty of this Kingdom we love. We look forward to standing beside you on the field and in the halls, celebrating the skill, fellowship, and joy that make Ansteorra shine so brightly among the Known World.

Even as we prepare for the labors and revels of Gulf Wars, our hearts also turn toward April, when we will take up the responsibilities of the Stellar Throne. The weeks ahead promise both great celebration and great work, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to serve the Kingdom in the fullness of that role.

In the weeks ahead, we hope to see many of you beneath the bright sun of war and in the courts and camps that follow. Know that we are eager to listen, to learn, and to work alongside you as we prepare for the reign to come.

Until we meet again upon the field or road, we remain

Yours in service to the Dream,
John and Vittoria
Prince and Princess of Ansteorra

Sovereign's Champion Announcement

Gretting’s Ansteorra!

His Royal Highness John Drake does invite those brave and courageous enough to compete in his King’s Champion Tournament at Coronation this Saturday. To prove worthy, he has asked the armoured fighting community to bring your best and battle it out in a two and a half hour grueling bear pit. His champion will be decided by the combatant with the highest score who wishes to be his champion, unless the score is close, then you must prove yourself in a finals. HRH does invite those not vying for the title to still compete and show prowess on the field and challenge those looking to be his champion.

Tournament sign up will begin at 9am and the tournament will start at 9:30. You may join the bearpit at any time but risk not getting maximum points.

His Royal Highness and the populace of Ansteorra look forward to seeing honor, humility, and prowess on the field and hope you can join us.

Words of the Crown

For Vittoria's Champion:

To those who would stand as My Champion, hear these words and know the duty you seek.
My Champion will stand ready to guard Me from harm, on the field and off. You will take the field with Me in both rapier and armored combat as needed, and when I cannot take the rapier field, you will bear My favor as needed in My stead with honor and skill.
You are expected to attend Me at the greater part of My events, including Pennsic, that I may be well served and defended. If you are unable to attend, it is your responsibility to see that I am properly guarded in your absence.
You will answer any challenge made in My name.
This is the duty. Consider it well.

The Queen’s Champion Tournament format will be a Bedford Tournament, with those willing and able to serve as Her Champion advancing to a small, single elimination bracket. All parts of the tournament will be “bring your best” for weapon choice and the final elimination bracket will be best 2 out of 3 passes.
There will be a prize given to the highest points earner in the Bedford section of the Tournament: https://cunnan.lochac.sca.org/index.php/Bedford_Points_Tournament
The Queen’s Hope Tournament will be held interspersed during the rounds of the Queen’s Champion Tournament. The exact format will be dependent on the number of entrants.
Letters of Intent are Welcome but not required. All entrants are requested to present themselves to Her Majesty at their leisure during the day.

On The White Scarf

When I was a little girl the thing I wanted to grow up to be most was a White Scarf. There is an old saying in the rapier community that you need to spend 100 hours in Tivar's living room in order to become a White Scarf- I probably had those hours before I was 10, and so I have a unique perspective. Not many people know this, but the Soldier, Scholar, Courtier part of the White Scarf Oath comes from Hamlet. In Act 3 Scene 1 Ophelia describes Hamlet, listing “The courtier’s, soldier’s, scholar’s, eye, tongue, sword,” Nearly 30 years ago while they were writing the White Scarf oath, Don Maelgwyn proposed that the way Ophelia views Hamlet should be the attributes that Dons and Donas should hold themselves to. These were adopted as defining characteristics and remain central to the Oath to this day.
Over 10 years ago the rapier community of the known world was irreversibly changed, and though that change was a boon to legitimizing the community We love so well, the White Scarf of Ansteorra was set adrift. The White Scarf had paved the way for a rapier peerage by showing the nobility of spirit within our community, for Peers cannot be made, only recognized. But We fear that the legacy of the White Scarf may be getting lost. There are many questions about where it belongs in the post-peerage community, questions that are raised in circles and conversations to this day. Some question if it has a place at all anymore.
In Our reverence for the history, heritage and tradition of the Ansteorran White Scarf, we cannot leave this beloved institution to languish in uncertainty. We are determined to see the promise of this order fulfilled, that new generations of rapier fighters may continue to strive for it and view it as part of the pinnacle of what this community can be.
As the Order of Chivalry offers a choice to swear fealty, We are making a change so that the Ansteorran Order of the White Scarf become the symbol of those who choose to belong to the Queen when they are elevated to the Order of Defence. We feel this places the Order at the height it truly deserves, and honors the history and culture in an unmistakable way.
We would not see any reason to change things for current members who have earned their place in the Order - many have been elevated to the Order of Defence already, others are on the path, and others may no longer be able to walk the path but are held in high esteem in Our eyes and the eyes of the community. In the future, the primary decision for inclusion in this order will rest in the hands of the Queen and the Candidate, though the Queen shall of course have every right to seek the thoughts and heart of the Order of the White Scarf, both within and outside of the Order of Defense, in confidence, as she sees fit.
With this change we are also calling upon the Blades of Merit to poll on new members of their order, so that the Crown can be advised at the Grant level.
It is well and good that the Order of Defence adopted Soldier, Scholar and Courtier as a part of who they are, for without the White Scarf there would not have been the Order of Defence. And now We align the two for all the known world to see the esteem of this Order.

To Cadets

An open letter to the Cadets of Ansteorra,
We have heard the uncertainty that followed Our words in court, and We wish to reassure you of this truth: this change is not meant to deter anyone’s dream of becoming a White Scarf. Quite the opposite, our goal is preserve this beloved institution and give clarity to the White Scarf as a thing worth striving toward.
This change was not made lightly. White Scarves have spent years discussing this, and in the past months we have spent many hours consulting with Roses and White Scarves alike. Our announcement was made with the support of the circle, and in the spirit of great love and respect.
The path has evolved, as all traditions do with time, but I assure you that in aligning the White Scarf with the Order of Defense we are restoring it to the prestige of the days before the rapier peerage. The White Scarf still stands as an ideal worthy of aspiration, and cadets remain an important part of that legacy and future.
We both understand, intimately, what it means to dream, and what it means to dream of this order. While it might feel that this change makes your dream seem more distant, or perhaps impossible, we hope that you know that we believe in you, and your ability to achieve that dream. Continue to learn. Continue to grow. Continue striving to embody the virtues of Soldier, Scholar, and Courtier. Those ideals are no less worthy today than they were for the generations who came before you.
- Vittoria Regina
