A Bride's Price
The bride price negotiation and marriage of Lord Owen ap Aeddan and the Lady Dagmar Keldeleth of Bohemia as recalled by Iarll Owen ap Aeddan.

After courting the lovely Lady Dagmar for many seasons, we were blessed with the news that she was going to provide me with an heir; her blindness giving her sight into things others could not see, she had already informed me that it would be a son. As she had proven that she could provide me with heirs, I began the arrangements to settle the bride's price so that we could be married. I had secured my Grandfather Beorhlic Folcwineson as my advocate during the bride price negotiations for me to wed the lovely Lady Dagmar. Her lands in Bohemia were blessed with silver mines. She was a Lady of fine standing within the Crown's court and was beloved by many. She had secured the mighty House Wolfstar as her advocate. We agreed to meet following the Crown's business in the lands of the shire of Gnoman Vale as we were both going to be in attendance at the grand event they held called Margrave/Vormund event as I was stepping down as the Margrave of the group. His Excellency of Wiesenfeuer, Sir Burke was the Crown's representative who presided over Court for Their Royal Majesties and the negotiation of the bride price.

I had brought considerable resources to bear, for I wanted her family to know she would greatly benefit from becoming my wife. I had a sample of all of the crops that were grown on my lands: sugar that was processed at my facilities, as well as gold and silver enough for the bride’s price - and the share that would be claimed by the Crown. I had brought my best men with me: Lord Jean Paul de Sens, Lord Alarich Iangard von Thorn, Lord Barendger, Lord Dunolf, Lord Cormac, Lord Bjorn, and a contingent of 30 armed men to make sure the contract that was decided on was held to.

Now when we had set up for the negotiations, the men I had guarding the items I had brought were from several Irish clans -- and not being accustomed to the civilized dealings, they let much of what I had brought to pay the bride price be slowly stolen while the negotiations were ongoing, much to my dismay. We discussed much that night, and late did the discussions go when the Lady Dagmar stepped away with only a single female escort to take her leave. A couple of my armed men intercepted the Lady Dagmar and the Lady Meadhbh inghean Rois and promptly took them to a safe place for the duration of the rest of the negotiations.

Once I was able to inform my advocate that we were now in possession of the Lady Dagmar and Lady Meadhbh, the negotiations suddenly went far more favorably for my estate. We agreed to the following terms:
# I would pay to release her tailor from a bit of a gambling debt he had gotten himself into.
# I would provide workers for her silver mines for a percentage of the silver
# I would claim before the Crown that the child she was carrying was my heir according to the laws of my people laid out by Hywel ap cadell also known as Hywel Dda.
# She would manage my estates so I could focus on other things, and she would care for our heirs and ensure they were properly raised
# she would bring her considerable talents to bear to improve my presence on and off the field
# she would will her lands in Bohemia to me as I would arrange for my lands in Gwynedd and outside of Jaffa in the Kingdom of Outreimer, to her.

My men and I celebrated the success of the negotiations into the wee hours of the morning. As my time as a single Lord was drawing to a close, I needed to say good bye to it properly. After a bit of time to recover from the many libations consumed, I was dressed in my new finery and ready to go and claim my bride. I arrived with thirty-five armed men and the Baron of Wiesenfeuer before my gorgeous bride whom I had courted for a most agreeable time. She was dressed stunningly and glowed on this most auspicious day. Our party met no resistance as we headed to the field we had arranged to be married in. I drove what would become our family sword into the ground and we were lashed together and our public vows given!

Estrella, 2005:
As I am fresh from the War that is Estrella, I would be happy to share my take on this mighty War.

Lo, did the mighty Northern warriors of Ansteorra meet within the Barony of Wiesenfeuer, and with much tasking, girded our harnesses and prepared for the arduous pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Atenveldt. Our Northern allies, the glorious Kingdom of Calontir, had called for aid in this time of dire need, as war is all around us. Sieur Jean Paul de Sens, Equis Cassius Lepus, Lord Yoshi, Lord Julius, Dante and myself left our fair lands to go to the aid of our beloved allies. The beautiful Colete and my Man at Arms Charles the Grey, at the war, joined us making their own way to this mighty battle.

As all good and nobles know, when that much glory is to be had, tournaments must be fought. The glorious tournament that the Kingdom of the Outlanders sponsors was divided into four fields. Only the two most victorious fighters could then move onto the next round of this grand tournament. Sieur Jean Paul defeated two sitting Kings to secure his place in the final round of this tournament. Both he and myself fought our way to the final round and had a glorious time doing it.

As dawn broke on our second day in this strange Kingdom, the call to battle was heard throughout the camps. The might that is Ansteorra was felt by the foes of our Allies this day. Equis Cassius and myself were invited by the King of Artemisia to fight in a Greatsword-only tournament to be held the next evening.

As dawn approached on the third day, again the call to arms was heard. It is hard to describe how mighty the blows thrown at our opponents were, but many were thrown and great was the glory that was had on this fine day. I was most pleased with the gallantry and skill showed by Julius and Yoshi. They did their Kingdom proud. That night Equis Cassius and myself prepared ourselves for the honor of fighting in Artemisia’s grand tournament. The honor and glory that was displayed will not soon be forgotten. The courtesy of this Kingdom should be shouted throughout the known world. I am glad to know such a good man as HRM Reinmar Wolfmeier and his wonderful Queen Albreda Wolfkeeper. I look forward to any meeting I have with either of them in the future. Also their Kingdoms future is well secure, as their Heir, Sir Sean Kirkpatrick Tarragon, is not only mighty on the field but a very model of chivalry off the field as well. I can only hope to get to know him better in the future.

I was told that the Kingdom of Atenveldt was a desert. Now, I have traveled to the western region of our great Kingdom, and it was far more desert-like than Atenveldt. It rained like we were in Meridies throughout the night and into the dawn of the next day. With encouraging words from our mighty King Ansteorra did we take the field, and treated our opponents to the glory that battling Ansteorra is. We fought all day, and in the end, our allies held the field. The time for our departure was nigh. We prepared ourselves, and broke camp. Much ransom and gifts were brought back to our fair kingdom. Already my sword arm yearns for the coming day when our allies call for our help again and we gird our armor on to do glorious battle once again in the far away land of Atenveldt.

NSTIW: Jarl Owen Ap Aeddan was on the road to an Owasso Demo... Lady Leota, Lord Ivan Half-Jaw and myself were on board. Now, Ivan and I act like brother and sister, and five minutes into the drive, we asked Owen, "Are we there yet?" Owen responded, "Two more hours." Continuing this annoying behavior, we asked about every 15-20 minutes. We arrive. The Demo happens... and, well, Ivan and myself find ourselves, off the field, some two to three hours into the day. Returning home, we lift our pant legs and find we both have mirror bruises across our legs... located where our legs had faced Owen in the car.

Hugo van Harlo
Hrabe’ Vaclav Semjaka recently asked in the Calontir kingdom group about those lofty figures who you thought “I hope to be like them if I get to be a peer” when you began playing in the SCA. One name immediately came to mind for me.

I discovered the SCA as a senior at Oklahoma State (Mooneschadowe, Ansteorra), where I hung out around the fringes before moving to Tulsa (Northkeep) for a year and really diving in.

Like most college dudes who get into the Society, I was enamored with the chivalry mythos... and the prospect of wearing armor and wailing on people.

I met Syr Owen Ap Aeddan during that season. Yes, his Prowess was great. And yes, I was obviously excited to see a large man like myself excelling at that level. But what impressed me the most was his Courtesy.

He was kind. He was hospitable and approachable. There was no over-inflated sense of Franchise, standoff-ish-ness, or Peer fear when you were around the man. He was happy to share his tips, beat you upside the head, and tell you what needed work without making you feel less for it, or that he was doing you a wearisome favor.

Really, he left more of a mark on naive, freshly graduated younger Hugo that I think he realized.

So, imagine my excitement many years later after getting back into the SCA when I see that familiar green and white heraldry at an event in the Lonely Tower (was it a Spring Crown?).

If I recall, he had some inter-kingdom schtick at court, but all I wanted to do was walk up after court, (re)introduce myself, and say thanks for the kindness he showed some random college kid who played for a short while a decade before.

The rattan game is no longer mine, *but* his example of Courtesy, kindness, and patience is something that applies even to super-nerd history research and study.

If the day ever comes, he was - and is - a Peer I want to be like.

Thanks again, Syr Owen.
A Bride's Price

The bride price negotiation and marriage of Lord Owen ap Aeddan and the Lady Dagmar Keldeleth of Bohemia as recalled by Iarll Owen ap Aeddan.
