Persona History:

Escarlata is a Spanish noble living in Granada, Spain in the late 1500s. Escarlata's family is a highly regarded regional merchant and purveyor of fabric, fabric dyes, citrus fruits, and pomegranates from the region. Their mother's family, Zubia, is known for agriculture and their Moorish influence in the Granada region. Their father's family, Zamarron, is historically known for their durable fabrics and coats in the Granada region and indeed the name is synonymous with fur and fleece jackets which they are known for making. Escarlata is the name given to the very rich red fabric, often accented with goldwork, that their family produces and which they are fond of wearing frequently, hence the nickname. Thier family focuses on merchant marine sales to the Old and New World. Their family is very successful, wealthy, and regionally powerful. When in Ansteorra, Escarlata is known as Escarlata de Granada because it's shorter and easier to remember than their full proper name.

Escarlata is well-known in court as an important regional patron of the arts and is the main financial backer of The Curtain Theatre in Bryn Gwlad and has produced a number of plays with The Baron's Men there. They are also known for hosting artistic competitions and lavish parties with exciting and extensive menus. Escarlata is known for both their wittiness and flair for the dramatic in court and is always ready to bring extravagance to a room. Escarlata is also known for their extensive wardrobe, love for entertaining, and particularly keen eye for ambiance. Escarlata is astoundingly well-rounded in their academic and artistic pursuits, not only can they read and write, but they are also a musician and and artisan of some renown.

No one has seen Escarlata in the same room at the same time as their twin, Sebastian Cornieles Ladron Vigilia Zubia y Zamarron. Sebastian is an avid and accomplished sailor who is responsible for the family shipping fleet. Sebastian also has a reputation for their luck in gambling and with the ladies. It is rumored that Sebastian purchased Madame Luchia's School for Wayward Girls with business partner Hanse Kleermacher and continued running it as a brothel when Luchia left Bryn Gwlad for An Tir. Following Hanse's death, Sebastian is rumored to be the sole proprietor. Sebastian has been seen on stage at The Curtain Theatre, and the School for Wayward Girls is located on the third floor of the Curtain. Sebastian is also of some note for his brewing. When in Ansteorra, Sebastian is known as Sebastian de Granada because it is shorter and easier to remember than their full proper name.

1) What’s the deal with Escarlata de Granada if your name is really some long formal Spanish name?
“Escarlata de Granada” is a nickname given to Eulalia Leticia Itzel Falcona Zubia y Zamarron by Ansteorrans. Escarlata is the formal name of a type of red woolen fabric which is made by Escarlata’s family in Spain. Escarlata fabric is, in fact, documentable in the 1500s and is a red woolen fabric often used with extensive goldwork and was popularized in the Granda region of Spain. Because Escarlata wears the fabric often and works to sell and popularize its usage, it is a nickname. Escarlata is also from Granda, Spain. It is common in period for foreign individuals to become known by nicknames or shortened versions of their foreign names. In Ansteorra, people know Eulalia Leticia Itzel Falcona Zubia y Zamarron as the person from Granda that wears Escarlata fabric, hence Escarlata de Granada.
2) So, what’s the deal with Sebastian? Is that an alternate persona?
No. Escarlata is just your classic late 1500’s Spanish aristocratic roaring girl, stylized a la Ana de Mendoza de la Cerda y de Silva Cifuentes. Escarlata does have an alternate name when presenting their masculine side, though this is not an alternate persona, it is actually Escarlata who is actively acting outside of the gender binary and is presenting themselves in masculine clothing as their “brother” there is not actually another person, just Escarlata cleverly presenting as their own “brother” so that in society they can do things that only a masculine individual can do, like running a business, being in charge of a fleet of merchant ships, etc. It's not actually a different person, it's Escarlata in drab playing the role of their brother to do the things that they want to do.

Service Works and Contributions

Escarlata tirelessly serves and uses her knowledge of Servant Leadership, logistics, volunteer management, and nonprofits to expand, make efficient, and facilitate service works in her barony and the kingdom where possible.

2024

  • Ansteorran Longship Association - Volunteered free legal services to the Longship Association, raised over $2,000.00 in funding to help ALA move their ships to the new location at the Texas Transportation Museum, this included individual donations and matching donations made to a birthday fundraiser.
  • Ansteorra Populace Support - Changed name from "goon squad" to "populace support" and supported Goldweard with heraldic research for an appropriate badge as the initial proposed badge conflicted with the Amicita of Ansteorra insignia.
  • Armor Up Project - Worked with Helene Margarethe von Braunschweyg to help outfit the Bryn Gwlad War Company and increase available armor for gender minority fighters in the Barony of Bryn Gwlad. Aided new fighters in finding and, where needed, assisted in purchasing helms. Purchased excess Kydex to help outfit smaller forearms and create much needed chest armor.
  • Clan Blue Feather - Continued the Blue Feather tokens program from 2023, creating abalone shell tokens which were handed out throughout the year starting at Steppes Warlord.

Escarlata got their start in the Canton of Dragonsfire Tor in 2003, and remained active there while in undergraduate school and graduate school until moving to Bryn Gwlad for more graduate school in 2010. While in Bryn Gwlad, they were periodically active in the barony, assisting with events when asked. They also became very active with The Baron's Men until completing law school in 2018, and served as a stitcher, actor, props manager, costumer, producer, director, board member, and toilet cleaner, among other roles. Following the COVID-19 Pandemic, they have been quite active at the local level in Bryn Gwlad and increasingly active at the regional and kingdom level as well as in the College of Heralds.

Special Needs Information:

Escarlata should not eat or drink items with raw vinegar, it chemically burns their tongue. Escarlata suffers from an autoimmune disorder and due to it and the medications they take for this condition, they are more sensitive to heat and sunlight and must stay adequately hydrated; they may also need assistance lifting items after a long day or during a high inflammation day and may need to rest more often after strenuous activities, especially in heat.

In Case Of Court:

While I do like to be surprised, I also like to be adequately dressed when called into court. ;-) I prefer to walk myself into court and require no escort. Because of autoimmune issues or wearing very fussy garb, I may not kneel in court.
