Persona History:

Ivo Blackhawk was born to northerren English gentry during the latter part of the reign of Henry VI of England. Schooled in the sciences, history, numbers and the military arts by his father, he left his home in England in in 1470 and traveled through France before his travels brought him to the Shire of Mooneschadowe, in the Kingdom of Ansteorra in AS 32 to continue his studies.

Interests:

In AS 43, Ivo began syndication of the Blackfeather News, a free-to-air podcast highlighting news and events across the northern region. The show ran from 2008 until the middle of 2009 with strong listenership and positive feedback from local, kingdom and even some international listeners. It was concluded when mundane priorities pulled him away from production.

Ivo had established himself as one of the predominant site and list heralds in the principality of Vindheim, and in Ansteorra. He has personally walked over a hundred miles over the course of his heraldic career, covering campsites for almost every group in the north at one point or another. He has cried for multiple crowns across three kingdoms, cried courts for multiple Baronies, and over two hundred populace meetings.

As a list herald, he has called tournaments in three kingdoms, including Ansteorra's 30th year's rapier tournaments, and the 2013 Gulf War Roses rapier tournament, with over 150 entrants. Ivo has personal alliances that cross into Calontir, Gleann Abhann, Meredies, Trimaris and Atlantia.
He presently teaches List and site heraldry as the local, kingdom, and interkingdom levels in an ongoing effort to expand the skill set.

In 2010, Ivo began work on a comprehensive newcomers class that he would later title "Introduction to Ansteorra" intended as a 'first step' for new, or transplant players to the kingdom.

Ivo's online video library includes open access to his Site and Lyst heraldry classes, as well as his newcomers class "introduction to Ansteorra".
In 2019, Ivo conducted a series of interviews at three northern events in an effort to help promote the local personalities in the region. The series, titled "From a kingdom of hero's comes..." presented the interviews to the public a few weeks later, and they remain published on Ivo's YouTube channel, "the Hawks Nest".

In 2021, during the waning months of the pandemic, Ivo began production of a new web series titled "lets talk" where he would highlight and talk about SCA specific topics for new and veteran players alike. The series, released on a weekly basis, is still in production.

Ivo is a student of period woodworking, and both practices and teaches the fundamentals to anyone who expresses an interest or need in the skills. One of his signature creations in this discipline is his "$4 loom", a simple, all-wood starter loom that he developed with Eadwyn seo Gathyrde and Isaac Bane as an easily made point of entry loom for people interested in trying weaving.

In 2019, Ivo began production of cast pewter medallions intended to recognize hard work in the voice heraldry sphere. Since then start, he has begin an in depth study period portrait medallions. Ivo's research has allowed him to produce custom medallions for largess purposes for the last 4 years.

Timeline of activity:

Ivo joined the SCA in AS32 (9/97) with an interest in chivalric combat.
A year later, Ivo would meet Lillias MacGuffin, from the Scottish highlands, and soon after would begin courting her.

Later in AS 33, Ivo would be made Man-At-Arms to Lord Alarich Iarngard von Thorn. Alarich served as mentor, teacher, council and friend for close to five years before both he and Ivo agreed to conclude the formal relationship.

In September AS 34, Ivo would propose to Lillias right after morning court Wiesenfeuer Baronial. The two would be married at Wasteland Games in September of AS 36 (2001).

From AS 34 to AS 37, Ivo served as a shield man with the Liondragon Guard, serving in five campaigns, including two Gulf Wars and three Battles of the Three Kings. After returning from Gulf Wars 13, Ivo resigned his enlistment in the guard and stored his uniform tabard for the final time.

In AS 35 Ivo Was recognized with a Sable Thistle in Bardcraft after a strong showing in several bardic circles and local competitions, especially in story telling.

Between AS 34 and AS 39, Ivo became active in local voice heraldry, stepping into the role of unofficial voice herald for the monthly shire populace meetings. This also included early working with list heraldry in Northkeep, Wiesenfeuer, Mooneschadowe and Namron, especially with the rapier community.

In AS 37, at the prompting of the local Seneschal, Ivo would apply for, and then become the local Hospitaler (now called Chatelaine). He would hold the office for the next year, helping and coordinating with recruitment and demo efforts.

From AS 39 to AS 43, Ivo quickly moved into a heavy focus on voice heraldry, becoming a regular list and site herald across the north of the kingdom while still continuing to call populace meetings for his local group in their traditional “court” format.

The end of AS 40 saw Ivo and Lillias welcome a son to their family, a member who would soon become a staple sight in their travels across the Kingdom.

In AS 41 (9/2006), Ivo was named Bardic champion of the Barony of Wiesenfeuer after prevailing in its annual competition. He would go on to serve the Barony as it’s champion performing artist and bardic ambassador for the next year.

In AS42 Ivo was first fully exposed to royal court heraldry, and was given the chance to meet current and past Golden Staff Heralds, including HL Druinne de Salesberie during her tenure as Golden Staff for TRM Romanius Vesperianus and Deanna della Penna (56th Crown of Ansteorra). It would be Druinne who laid out the fundamental steps needed to get into royal court heraldry, and highlighted in no vague terms why travel would be needed if Ivo was serious about pursuing this discipline.

From AS 43 through AS 45, Ivo would travel each month to the populace meetings of the Baronies of Namron, Wiesenfeuer, and Northkeep, as well as that of the sire of Mooneschaodwe as part of an intensive study of SCA court heraldry.

In AS 43, Ivo was would be named Protégé to Master Robert Fitzmorgan, OP. The formal announcement was made at Mooneschadowe's third Provincial Event. The relationship would endure for several years until Robert retired from the society.

Also in AS 43, Ivo’s work in heraldry across the north was recognized by HRM Vanessa de Verona, with a Sable Crane given on the list field between rounds at Northkeep’s Castellan XIV.

Later that same year, Ivo would step into the role of Northern Regional herald, helping to coordinate, educate, and support local heralds across the northen portion of the kingdom. He served in this role for just over a year.

In September of AS 45, his service to the Barony of Northkeep was recognized when HE Ian Dun Gillan and HE Kelandra Carmichael presented him with a Caistael Cridhe, Northkeep’s baronial service award. Ivo is the only non-resident of Northkeep to hold the award, and additionally, his medallion is the first given with a legacy to its name.

In AS 47 Ivo traveled to the Ansteorran-hosted Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium, where he would first meet Master Alexander Ravenscroft, OP, the War herald for the upcoming Gulf Wars. After Ravenscroft attended Ivo's site heraldry class, he would immediately offer Ivo a leading roll in reconstituting site heraldry at Gulf Wars.

Ivo would serve as deputy site herald For Gulf Wars 23 and 24, and would go on be the principal coordinating site herald for the Gulf Wars 25, 26, and 27. During his tenure as lead site herald, Ivo would advocate for the site heraldry of the event, and help set up better communications with the other departments across site to help make sure critical announcements were made.

A few months after Gulf Wars 23, Ivo would be called into court at Namron’s Beltane event, and be given his Star of Merit. The award itself was meant for that year’s Gulf Wars, but Ivo missed that court because he was helping someone prepare for a procession the next day.

That Gulf Wars would serve as a personal catalyst for Ivo, affording him connections and new relationships from across the known world continue to serve and assist him for years to come. It would also reinvigorate him in his service for the kingdom.

Later in AS 47, Ivo would take on the role of Minister for Arts and Sciences for his local group, an office he held for a year before mundane complications obligated him to transfer the role.

In AS 48 through AS 51, Ivo would also serve as the local archery marshal, helping to not only support the local archers, but also building the local community.

AS 50 would see Ivo step into the role of event Steward for the first time when Mooneschadowe hosted that year’s Ansteorran Heraldic and Scribal Symposium, held in Mooneschadowe. Three years later, Ivo and Liliana Barns would work together to host another AH&SS at the same site.

In May of AS 52 (5/2017), Ivo would travel to Steppes Warlord to herald the procession for his friend, Deanna de la Penna, as she was elevated to the order of the Laurel. This would mark the first peerage elevation for Ivo, and would open a new chapter into her voice heraldry career.

At GW27 (3/18, AS 53), Ivo’s fifth consecutive Gulf Wars, Master Alexander (himself from Meridies) would offer Ivo protégé-ship, a relationship that was formalized before the Queen of Ansteorra on Wednesday of that war.

Two months later (7/2017), at the AS 23 Ansteorran heraldic and Scribal Symposium, Ivo was one of 4 heralds recognized in court with Thistles in recognition for the art and the science that goes into their respective heraldic work. This marked an important shift in the kingdom’s award traditions regarding heralds and the work they do.

A year later (5/2018), Ivo would return to Steppes Warlord her herald the procession for another close friend, Sir Mahdi, into his inclusion into the order of Defense.

In AS 54, Ivo would coordinate with then Northern Regional herald, Annais de Montgomerie, to create an all-day intensive training event for local heraldic officers and people interested in the office. Their efforts would culminate in less than 8 weeks with the first ever “Local Heralds professional Development Retreat”. The curriculum for which would be released as the “Unofficial Ansteorran Local Heralds Training & Resource Textbook”. The event was hosted by the Barony of Wiesenfeuer, in Stillwater OK, and successfully produced over two dozen warrantable heralds after the full day of training.

In the months that followed, Ivo would spearhead an effort to create an online community for northern heralds, recognizing that most heralds don’t have time to socialize during events or regular activities because they are more often then not called upon to serve.

This period would also see Ivo teach his first two online classes, using what rudimentary online meeting and video conferencing software was available at the time.

At the end of AS 54, Ivo would work as the Herald in Charge for Ansteorra’s 40th year celebration, a 4-day event that ultimately included over 800 attendees. During court that Friday, Ivo was presented with a Sable Sparrow in recognition for his work organizing the Herald’s Retreat.

When the Pandemic struck, and lockdown went into effect half a year later, Ivo would be part of the society wide effort to help cultivate and build online communities. He would teach his site heraldry, lyst heraldry, and Intro to Ansteorra classes online multiple times, and would also write a class on how to teach online, in order to assist members who were not so quick to make the jump to the digital space. Each of these classes would be recorded and published online over the course of the pandemic for free and open access from Ivo’s YouTube channel.

As a side project during then 2020 calendar year, Ivo researched and wrote “Sword Sunday” on his personal blog, offering fun glimpses into various sword-related topics across history. He would publish 52 Sword Sundays before concluding the project in December of that year.

After over a quarter century with his first group, Ivo and his family would move to the Barony of Wiesenfeuer in AS 56, during the reign of Jason III and Margherita III, and during the height of the pandemic lockdown.

In May of AS56 (5/21), Ivo would set up his home video studio for the first time, and begin recording his “Lets Talk” series. These videos would be recorded and made freely available for SCA members interested in new and useful information about various topics within the society.

In September AS 56 ( 9/2021), Ivo would step into the role of Baronial Herald for Wiesenfeuer, leveraging his experience and knowledge in the heraldic arts as the barony tried to adapt to the challenges that came with the new COVID safety restrictions in place then. Later that year, he would herald his Baronesses and their entourage into court for the first ever Vindheim coronet tournament. He would also help list herald at the same event, which included teaching several new prospects about the role of SCA lyst heraldry.

During this period in his new house, Ivo would finally have the space and time to set up a dedicated shop. This would allow him to more fully research and pursue the arts of woodworking and medallion making.

He would go on to established a local woodworkers guild in AS 56, and would keep the guild active through AS 57 with classes and projects, as well as teaching woodworking classes to the SCA and the public in classrooms, demos, and other public venues. Ivo’s work would include hand-making over 75 of his “$4 looms” over the coming years and donating them to weaving classes or individuals interested in learning the art of weaving.

In July of AS56, Ivo would be presented a Sable Thistle for his woodworking at Northkeep’s Castellan event.

Ivo has also intensified his work in medallion making, producing numerous unique works with period techniques. His work is almost always gifted to others under the guidance of “use this to make someone else’s SCA better”. His work includes A&S competition entries for Bonwicke and Wiesenfeuer, as well as a personal project to design and make 3 custom medallions for each Vindheim royal couple to use.

In December of AS 56 (2021), after only a year in Wiesenfeuer, Ivo stewarded Wiesenfeuer’s Yule Revel under the pandemic safety protocols at the time, requiring that the event would be held outdoors, and not have a feast or tavern. This event would also include the premier Princess’s Blade rapier championship, organized in less than 5 days with the help of Don Marcus von Furth and Lady Lyra Fiammetta Caravaggio.

At this event, Ivo would receive a Flint and Steel from Their Excellencies, and would then receive a Sable Talon for target archery from their Highnesses Romanius and Deanna. This Talon would be the first ever award given in a Vindheim principality court.

Coming out of the lockdown, Ivo was able to begin regularly attending missile practices once again, and was able to form close bonds with local members of the thrown weapons, siege, and archery communities. He would renew his qualifications for marshal at large, and would go on to help teach new archers, and to help run the range, giving the other marshals a chance to practice, or just take a break.

In April of AS 56 (4/2022), at Wiesenfeuer’s first Baronial Championship after lockdown, Master Richard Fairbourne would take Ivo as a foster protege, affording him local mentorship, representation, and advocacy on his service path.

At the first Vindheim Missile academy (AS 57, 6/22), Ivo would receive the award of the Silver Fountain (later renamed Fountain of Vindheim) for his work supporting the principality with his voice heraldry.

In June AS 57, (6/23), Ivo traveled to Eldern Hills & Bonwicke’s joint “2 Artisans, 2 Bards” event, where he would enter both competitions, and then later be named the Champion Bard of Bonwicke, beginning a long-term relationship with the barony.

In July AS 57 (7/2023), Wiesenfeuer would host a second Heralds’ professional development retreat, this time in Oklahoma City. Ivo would once again coordinate and steward this event. The following year, Bryn Gwlad would host a third such event in the southern portion of the kingdom, reaching out to a whole new group of heralds. While Ivo would teach at this event, Sigrun Í Biarká would take up the role of event steward.

Looking to expand on his work in medallion making, Ivo would travel to the AS 57 (2/2025) Laurels’ Prize Tournament to showcase his work and connect with other artisans. In court that night, Ivo would be called into court by his Herald’s retreat co-conspirator, Annais de Montgomerie, now Star Principal Herald. There, invoking one of the powers reserved for the office of principal herald, she names Ivo the newest Herald Extraordinary in recognition for his 27 years of work supporting and teaching people at all levels, in and out of the Ansteorran College of heralds. Ivo would be the 30th herald named herald Extraordinary in the Kingdom’s 42 year history, and the 134th in the history of the SCA. He would go on to register his personal heraldic title “Resolute Herald”, and his motto as “Teach some, Lead many, Inspire all”.

Later that same night, Ivo would also be called into court before Queen Nicolette and welcomed into the order of the Iris of Merit, marking his second grant-level award, this one recognizing his works in the arts and sciences.

In April of AS 58 (4/24), at Wiesenfeuer Baronial, Ivo would be called into Principality court and recognized with the award of the Brazier of Vindheim for his service teaching target archery to new and interested archers.

June of AS 59 (6/2024) would have Ivo travel back to Bonwicke, where he would coordinate the Bardic Competition to find his successor. Also, he would herald his good Friend, Beatrix Funtain into her investiture as one of the two Territorial nobles of the Barony.

This relationship would come full circle six months later at Wiesenfeuer Yule Revel (AS 59, 12/24), where Ivo would herald Beatrix in yet again, this time for her own elevation to laurel.

In a small bit of irony that day, Ivo’s A&S competition entry of a custom pewter medallion commemorating the event was judged the winning piece that day, and he was called into court minutes before Beatrix’s elevation ceremony and names the new baronial Artisan.

Ivo was able to wear the Baronial artisan’s sash and his herald’s tabard while crying Beatrix’s processing into court that night.
