January 17, 2023:It is impossible to write an appropriately heartfelt and grateful message to the Crown and Kingdom of Ansteorra, for being honored with an Augmentation of Arms (video at link). I feel a high degree of regret for not being able to accomplish a great number of goals I had planned. Reflecting on the people and activities we passionately shared, I’m very proud of the legacy I leave behind. I’m extremely honored to know that much of what I’ve learned the last 20 years will continue to be shared. I do regret not being able to receive the honor in person. I wish all the best to everyone and hope you know how much I have missed being among you.

There is much to be said of HE Gassion de Beaumarchais. Baron, Chivalric Fighter, Rapier Fighter, Cut & Thrust Fighter, Skilled Metal Worker, and more. Yet here is a man who has gone out of his way to help me especially in my first few years of rapier. I was gifted a rapier blade and Gassion made me a hilt. He purposely made it an open hilt so I would learn how to properly defend my sword hand. I was so thrilled and wanted to show my thanks. I offered him a rose yellow of friendship. Later that day he worked with me on parries for what seemed like hours. There has been several other times HE took time out to work with me one-on-one on a specific skill and despite many a bruise later I am a better fighter because of it.

I didn't know Gassion very well, but we camped right next to them at my first Pennsic. We share stories and food through our time there. He was encouraging and always had a story to tell or advice to share. His love for his wife was obvious. His laughter was contagious.

Gassion, at our house, we had been admiring this photo moment of you both shortly before we read of your deserved Augmentation of Arms given by a wise Crown! I believe the photo is at a GW C&T where I was deeply impressed by your demeanor and your devotion.

You are so often in our thoughts as an educator, warrior, and friend. You have always taught so much that enriches the hobby and, verily, the lives of many. It is a blessing to know you and Delesse.

One Samhain, after the traditional Eldern Hill’s Geas tournament, there was an additional fighting activity thought up by William Lindsey as I recall, for His Excellency Gassion’s entertainment. The intent was to make shields that would easily be destroyed during fighting. But if anyone knows of the handy work of William Lindsey, he does not make things that bring easily. Even when the intent is to do so! I recall that me and Charles the Grey of Mooneschadowe were the last two left on the list for this particular challenge, to win by breaking the other person’s shield. We first started fighting in the usual manner, but quickly we began to just lay into each others shields with blows as hard as we could. We were eventually punching and slamming against one shield with the other shield, trying to get the edge to split, wood to bust, anything to give. After much effort, which may have included us two-handed swinging shields at each other, Charles was able to chip a measurable piece from my shield, marking him the winner. His Excellency gifted us a twisted copper torq each for our entertaining efforts.

Another time, at Vatavia’s Valor event in Calontir, Mooneschadowe had a couple of, at the time, newbies. I believe this was Malcom and Diana’s first event. Mooneschadowe had made the trip to participate in the melees. Before hand, Namron had invited us to crash in on their dinner plans, as long as we brought something to throw on the grill. We do our respective activities at they event, and I may have been a bit punch-drunk from my fighting earlier in the day by the time evening came. Our newbies and the few that did not go offsite to get dinner could smell the fires of other camps starting up to cook. I’m sure I stated with confidence at the time that the lovely aroma of food must be our friends Namron cooking, and surely they are waiting in anticipation for our arrival and for our tribute to the meal. We start to make our way down the road, me following my nose, and find a camp full of friendly faces ready to accept us. We greet everyone, and introduce our new people, trade food for plates, go through the line, and sit down to eat. The whole time His Excellency Gassion talking to us, welcoming us, encouraging us to enjoy the food. Shortly after we had sat down I believe either Malcolm MacCormok or Diana de Blyth leaned over to me and said something along the lines of, “Turpin, I don’t think this is Namron’s camp.” I begin to look around the camp, and realize the heraldry is specifically more Bison shaped than Tornado. We had definitely crashed the wrong camp for food and company. I recall attempting to apologize and stating that we could move on down the road to Namron’s camp. Gassion would not have it, of course. He happily welcomed us, even though we were not in the place we were supposed to be. There may have also been some demands as Baron of Eldern Hills for us to stay. Occasionally still Malcom and Diana will give me a hard time about crashing Eldern Hills camp. But the act of Gassion’s grace and acceptance will always make it a fond memory.
