I'm a fairly recent addition to the family, having started playing in my late 30's 5 years ago (later this month) My SCA career is younger than the MoDs. However, looking back, the SCA hovered next door to me most of my life.
I grew up in the shadow of Flag Pole Hill, where Steppes held practices and events throughout my childhood. We used to see the crazy people who would dress up and hit each other (those people are now my friends).
I went to college at Rice University, the birthplace of SCA rapier.
And, rather literally, my sister now lives next door to the original SCA event house in Berkeley.
I am glad that I finally stepped over the line and joined the society.
