The origin of our Alamosa Badge, as told by Alisandre Oliphaunt

Some years ago when Hrabia Jan was Baron, he had led the barony to war in the Outlands, and sitting around the fire, talk turned to war badges. Jan talked about how common it was in period to have plant badges, but how fairly rare in the SCA. I mean, it was convenient! You could stick the actual plant in your hat or belt, like the Welshman with the leek in Henry V. Jan suggested a cottonwood leaf for the barony, for its Latin name, alamosa.

And lo, the next day as the barony readied for war, they looked up at the trees around their camp and they were COTTONWOODS. And the eyes of the people of the barony got big like a cat’s and they seized cottonwood sprigs and wore them on helms, at belts, on hats. And when they came home, they registered it as a badge, fieldless. It had its birth as a war badge.

Later when someone made patches, they put them a red background to match the red of the war banner and the tabards of the Teeth of the Bear.
