Persona History:

Vladislav is of Romani heritage, settled in Wallachia. During the early 1300's he was captured in slave raids conducted by Radu Negru and sold into slavery to the Ottoman Empire. Through the devshirme system he was allowed to train and gain favor and eventually allowed to serve in the Ottoman cavalry as a Timarli Sipahi.

There are those for whom the SCA is a game. The persona that they portray is just that - a persona, a role that they are playing, like an actor in a play. Then there are those for whom the SCA is simply a window into the trueness of their being. Vlad is one such a person. He is the epitome of a knight, in my eyes. Gentle to those who need help. Fierce for those who need defending. Courteous to a fault and generous with laughter. When I introduced my (frighteningly attractive) 19 year old stepdaughter to the SCA, I told her that should she ever get separated from me or her father, and if she was in need of a safe place to go to, she should look for Vlad. That I trusted him implicitly, and he was a good person. I meant every word. (December 4, 2018)

Ok, so I would like to say that this weekend at 40th Year I saw a lot of awesome things happen - but there is one thing that I saw that absolutely blew my mind and made me more proud to be part of Ansteorra then anything I have had the pleasure of seeing the entire time I have been in the SCA. Don’t get me wrong; everything at 40th was great, but Sunday morning, I watched our King, Vladislav Strelec, running through the the rain, barefoot, with 5-6 guys from House Whitacre. They were helping anybody and everybody they could -- to either break down their campsite in the rain, to fixing pavilions that were getting damaged and destroyed from the rain, to even pushing cars, trucks and even trailers that were stuck in the mud with his own hands. He was getting covered in mud and sweat while doing it, with that same smile that he always has on his face -- that we have all seen his entire reign! And I was thinking about this tonight, and what makes this the most Amazing thing I’ve seen in the SCA, is because you could look at him and see that this man was out there because he just wanted to help people. He will never get an award for this, other then the people he helped, and the people who saw this, and the people that were there with him. No one would have ever known about this, and he did it anyways with a smile on his face. So I say again: this weekend I saw the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in the SCA. I saw our King lead by example, Love unconditionally, and Help when he didn’t have to. That makes me more proud of my Friend then he will ever know. (September 24, 2019)

I do not know HE Vladislav Strelec well but I do have one fond memory of him. The time he came to Youth Rapier practice for a lesson in preparation for war. I got to work with him on advances, retreats, lunges, parries, and drills for nearly 2 hours. The entire time Vlad was flirtatious, chivalrous, kind, and always smiling. I have yet to cross blades with him again but I hope to remedy that in the near future.

Vladislav once smiled so hard, he sprained his cheeks. Smiley Slav!

(At my first event, Ansteorra 40th Year...) The Ansteorran Longship company and their many Pelicans and Lions happily fed and regaled my friend and I with stories, so on Sunday morning we came back to help them tear down. (Everything) was SOAKED. There was SO MUCH RAIN. And their tent was HUGE. Mud kept getting churned up, and more folks hurried over to help. This man in a tank top and basketball shorts showed up and did a lot of helping too and I heard a couple "Your Majesty"s and realized OH (HECK) THAT'S THE KING, WHAT A COOL DUDE, HELPING OUT, WOW. And we finally had to get the canvas into the tent. The canvas was laid across the tent poles and a group of four of us shouldered the poles to carry it in. I was behind the King, and, like, I was holding up my pole, but my control over its lateral motion was limited at best. We all came to a stop, except for the guy on the other end of my pole. I started shouting "uh, sir? Sir? Your majesty, sir, you might wanna duck the pole--your head? The pole gonna hit your head?"

"It wont hit my hea--"

THONK
<stumble stumble canvas dropped>
And that's how I beaned the sitting King of Ansteorra with a big (ole) tent pole square in the skull. Like five minutes later, I was stuck halfway up my calves in the mud and he basically scruffed me like a sad wet cat and lifted me out of it. So. Legendary.

The VERY FIRST TIME I met Vlad, I had been sent to (where the Royals were behind) a curtain at Queen's Champion, to drop off a champion scroll for Bardic. I was afraid to go in so, I sort of hovered and he popped his head out. I was like, "Eek I'm sorry to bother you, I was told to turn this scroll in here." He took it and looked at it and said, "I'm a hugger - is it okay to hug you?"

The Story of Why Vlad is One of My Personal Heroes
A number of years ago, Lord Vlad was sitting at the table beside B and I, with other people, and some event in Mooneschadowe. It was an indoor event. And somebody got me laughing really hard and I couldn't breathe. I started coughing and I couldn't stop coughing. I didn't have any water, as my cup was empty. Lord Vlad vaulted over a conference table and RAN the fifteen yards to where the water fountain was, down the hall. He filled up my mug and brought it back and brought me water so that I could catch my breath again, and stop choking. He did this without really taking a pause or ... he was just, 'Somebody needs to fix this!' and Woosh! And he was gone. And he doesn't even remember this, I don't think, because he's looking at me like "I don't know this ever happened!" but I promise that it did. And people who just solve a problem without anyone saying or doing anything to encourage them is one of those things that makes me happy. And I'll never forget that. Because it was amazing." (Vlad adds, "The table wasn't that big." Elisaveta: "It was a CONFERENCE TABLE, Vlad! It was the same size as all conference tables!")

A Methiye in Praise of a Sultan

What can the moon learn from the sun?
upon the moon sun reflected

In all things cruelty to shun
The least of us well protected

With mercy the battle oft won
honor grace patience expected

With just the smile of our Sultan
The moon knows what is directed
