Ansteorra Farm, Field, and Forest
Ansteorra Farm, Field, and Forest
The Ansteorra Farm, Field, and Forest (FFF) is an interdisciplinary program designed for those who are passionate about understanding the historical, social, and environmental contexts of farming and land management. We strive to build community while encouraging the study, teaching, and practice of all aspects of medieval agricultural, animal husbandry, and Forester related Arts and Sciences. This covers a rather large umbrella pertaining to pre-1600 interests such as: farming, gardening, foraging, plant identification, hunting, fishing, bush-craft, hedge-craft, etc. within the Kingdom of Ansteorra. These goals of nurturing our community are to learn with and from one another, by sharing our knowledge and love of all things farm, field, and forest (FFF) related. Membership is open to any individual who enjoys such pursuits, whether or not they reside within the borders of the Kingdom of Ansteorra.
Meetings and Activities
- The group hosts a range of meetings across the Kingdom throughout the year where members and/or the general populace gather to discuss research, projects, largesse, and other FFF related topics such as campfire cooking, dyeing, and wildcrafting. Gatherings may be in-person, virtual, or hybrid meetings. During in-person gatherings we sometimes host seed/plant swaps as well!
- Additionally, FFF members frequently teach a variety of classes throughout the year!

Leadership
- Jessimond of Emerickeskepe became the premiere FFF Studies Deputy MoAS upon its creation by Magnifica Biatrichi Canzionari di Palermo who was our Kingdom MoAS at that time.
- Our first FFF ER Deputy, Isa Mikjalsdottir, is also the founder of the Namron Agriculture and Animal Husbandry group.
History and founding of our FFF Special Interest Group
- Previously known as "Equine Studies", our FFF community continues to include the equestrian arts, such as those focusing on the raising and daily use of horses and other equines. Note: Equestrian for military use and pageantry is studied under the Historical Martial Arts and Military Studies group.
- On May 17, 2024 the Farm, Field, and Forest Facebook Group was created, and thus we announced the existence of the study group to the Kingdom and the Known World.
- Ansteorra does not currently have a Chartered Forester Guild, but there IS interest, with discussions happening on our Ansteorra Foresters Guild (unofficial) Facebook Group [3]
- For the Agriculture and/or Animal Husbandry enthusiasts among our community members, we also have the Ansteorra Agricultural Arts & Sciences (unofficial) Facebook Group [4] which also includes gardening, foraging, and land management projects.
Education
- Our community does not have limits on what classes may be taught, or by whom, at any event or local Arts and Science (A&S) gathering.
- Our classes are strictly for educational purposes and study of medical practices from pre-1600, no matter the culture of origin. Information contained in classes pertaining to plant identification, herbalism, or cooking is not to be considered medical advice, nor should anyone take any osuch content as medical advice. Please see a registered or licensed medical professional for medical advice.
Notable Projects
- The community's largest project thus far has been our Cottager Life collaboration that was first created for War of the Rams in November 2024 being A.S. LIX (59). This was a multifaceted project between the FFF community, the Ansteorran Herbalism and Apothecary Guild (HA Guild), and Mistress Willoc macMuiredaig. HA Guild Chancellor, Jehanne de Montauban created a photo op area in the form of a medieval "jardin potager" (kitchen garden) in the central courtyard of Artisans Row. Additionally, there were a variety of classes held throughout the weekend, as well as extensive static displays highlighting the topics of each class.
- If you have an idea for a group project, please email the Farm, Field, and Forest Deputy MoAS.
