Ansteorran Herbalism and Apothecary Guild
Ansteorran Herbalism and Apothecary Guild
The Ansteorran Herbalism and Apothecary Guild was founded to encourage the study, teaching, and practice of medieval herbalism as well as study of medieval apothecary and pharmacy practice in the Kingdom of Ansteorra. The guild serves as a conduit for Herbalists and Apothecaries in the Kingdom of Ansteorra to communicate with and learn from each other, and to freely share their knowledge and love of medieval medicine. Membership is open to any individual living in the Kingdom of Ansteorra having an interest in such pursuits.
Please be aware that the Guild’s research and application is based on medieval theory and practice and is not intended for use in diagnosing or treating modern ailments. While many herbs remain viable in modern Holistic therapies, many other medieval ingredients have proven potentially lethal.
Meetings and Activities
- The Guild hosts a range of meetings across the Kingdom throughout the year where members and/or populace can gather to discuss research, projects, largess, and other herbal related topics such as cooking, gardening, and dyeing. This includes in-person, virtual, and blended meetings.
- In addition to meetings, the guild also teaches a variety of classes throughout the year and frequently hosts seed/plant swaps as well!

Education: Guild Classes
- The Guild offers a Certificate of Apothecary Basics. The classes that comprise the Certificate, or our core curriculum, were researched and developed by Viscount Seamus O’Caellaigh, OL of An Tir, author of “Pustules, Pestilence and Pain: Tudor Treatments and Ailments of Henry VIII“.
- The Guild encourages all learning and by no means places limits on what classes may be taught at any event. The intention is to have classes presented by the Ansteorran Herbalism & Apothecary Guild that have all been created by those with a common baseline in medieval herbalism & apothecary practices.
- Classes are taught by members who have previously taken the class and are open to ALL, be they a guild member or not!
- These classes are strictly for educational purposes and study of medical practices from pre-1600. They are not to be considered medical advice, nor should you take any of their content as medical advice. Please see a registered or licensed medical professional for medical advice.
Notable Projects
- The Guild's largest project thus far is our first Medieval Demonstration Garden that was created for Ansteorra 40th Year which was held in September 2019 being A.S. LIV (54).
- Guild members also put together gift baskets for Ansteorra's 48th Crown Miguel Sebastian de Oporto and Conal Alexandria O'Riordain, and Their Heirs, Vlad and Margaret which were presented at Kingdom A&S 2019.
- If you have an idea for a Guild project, please email your regional coordinator or the Guild Chancellor.
