Orlando Giovanni di' Gilead was born the son of a vineyard farmer in the Republic of Florence in the year 1524. The first 18 years of his life were somewhat uneventful but by 1542 most of the northern Italian states were being threatened by the British, Spanish and French bids to control Lombardy, Venice and most of the northern peninsula. In 1543 at the age of 19 Orlando joined the Spanish Imperial forces to repel the French under the Italian commander Prince Ferdinando Sanseverino.
