  • May, 1985 - The first Beltane Games are held. The brainchild of Viscountess Megan Andoniel of Glengalen writes, "It is a long journey from the day I conceived of Namron Beltane, and developed my ideas for a Celtic Games such as our kingdom had not yet attempted. As a Scottish Dancer I had attended many Ceilidhs and Celtic Games, and knew how to plan one, and I made it a May games so I could make a maypole and teach the dance around it. I shared my ideas with the most fun loving people I knew: Viking sailors on the Good Ship Raven: Orm, Ivar and Frea, and they agreed to support me. (Kindred from my homeland were few then, and you have to work with what you have. 😆 ) Such an irony it was, three Vikings and a Celtic lass planning her Games. Then I enlisted the support of the Baron and Baroness; it all unfolded, and an event was born. That was over forty years ago. Even in normal years over the past thirty, many of the original sports, bardcraft, and original flavor of the Games has been lost, but I'm glad the tug of war has survived, though in much diminished form. Originally I designed it as a double elimination affair over running water and all participants were told to bring field clothes to wear. Teams could be any mix of gender, and size/weight, and any number up to five. Even matches were not assured. We went through the eliminations through the latter part of the afternoon, and it was sheer pleasure to watch a team of four women, then smaller than me, and one slight gentleman drag their last opponent, a team made up of Finn Kelly O'Donald, Baron Bjorn, Andreas, and 2 other fighters of like stature through the mud — on their bellies! — to the winning side of the bank. They did it not with strength alone, but guile, skill and totally synchronized teamwork. I salute you Kaitlin (team captain), Mara, Wolf, and two women whose names I am not sure of. It was a joy to watch. "
