The eldest child, and only daughter, of Laird MacGuffin, Lillias was raised on the isle of Colonsay, on her family's anscestral lands. A rowdy and precocious child, yet also very intellectual for girls of the family, Lillias was most drawn to listening to bards, and to watching the members of the clan who fulfilled the ancestral duties of keeping all records on the island. When her father didn't object, she helped them out, and in exchange learned quite a bit, including having quite good Latin. She also learned, at her father's insistence, French and English as well as the traditional Gaelic. On her own, Lillias began writing poetry and music, and working at illumination by first copying that which she saw in manuscripts, and then beginning to do some original works. When she was sixteen, Lillias accompanied her father to the royal court of James III of Scotland, where Lillias became aware of the political complications of her country. While there, however, she was introduced to several of her father's contacts in other clans, and countries. She then accompanied her father to the English court of Edward IV. Also allowed to travel to France, her enjoyment of travel was sparked, and she pleaded with her father to allow her to advance her studies instead. Since she was not to inherit, and her father had had little luck finding a suitor willing to take his lovely daughter - her sharp mind and witty tongue scared off most men looking for a proper wife - he consented. Lillias travelled abroad, where she met an Englishman by the name of Ivo Blackhawk, as stubborn as she, but with similar interests. After three years of courtship, they were wed.
