Her Excellency, Baroness Jeanne-Marie la Verriere

Name History: When I first joined the SCA in the Barony of Calafia, Kingdom of Caid, a friend gave me the SCA name of 'Rhiannon' after a science-fiction hero from a book that I apparently resembled. I had this name for about 2 years before I officially changed it to Jeanne-Marie and decided on a specific persona. **Although it is more correct to write it as 'Jeanne Marie', I prefer the hyphenated 'Jeanne-Marie.'

Persona History:

Jeanne-Marie is the youngest daughter of a prominent glazier in the employ of Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy. Married off at a young age, and made a widow just as quickly, her station and available monies quickly improved, allowing Jeanne-Marie to travel and pursue a variety of artistic interests. Upon reaching Ansteorra and finding the climate agreed with her, she found herself once again being courted, this time by a wealthy Baron living in the lands known as Elfsea. She couldn't resist his charming efforts, and they were married. Happily living in Elfsea with him, she also enjoys brightwork/ jewelry, sewing, cosmetology (hair dressing and cosmetics,) and wearing really beautiful clothes.

  • Brightwork (Jewelry, metalwork, coronets)
  • Costuming
  • Period cosmetology (hairdressing, cosmetics, etc.)
  • Heraldic display
  • Combat archery
  • Being a supportive consort to my husband

Class Handouts

Timeline of Activity:

I began in the SCA in Caid in my junior year in high school in 1991. My best friend met an SCA'er in her after-school drafting program, and was invited to an SCA event (Potrero War.) She invited me to go with her, and for me it was love at first sight! I immediately got involved with the local group, the Barony of Calafia, and it was like suddenly having an extended family that actually cared about me, my interests, my goals. I learned how to sew my own clothes, make my own armor, and had a group of friends willing to help and encourage me in all my SCA endeavors. Some of my most proudest moments were becoming Duke Guillaume's squire, becoming Baroness Siobhan's apprentice, and the five wonderful years I enjoyed being the consort of Sir Abu Nur Rustam ibn Abdallah. I took a break from the SCA in 2000, and returned to it again in 2005 upon moving to the Barony of Bryn Gwlad (Austin, TX), Kingdom of Ansteorra. In 2012, I met my future husband, Sir Daire de Haya, at Gulf War, and we began dating. He first moved to Bryn Gwlad to be with me, and we were married that same year. In 2013, we moved to Elfsea (Ft Worth, TX.) I have been active within Ansteorra ever since.

This week's shout out goes to Honorable Lady Jeanne Marie (Michele Hays ). In addition to being an exceptional and very well rounded artist, she has won A+S competitions, and been very helpful on an individual level with assisting new players learn more about our society. But the crux of this shout out is her Academie. This series of informative classes has really helped not only spread knowledge to the local groups but had helped bring the populace closer together. Very recently I have heard that this approach will be rolled out to other groups within our kingdom and other groups outside of our kingdom have taken interest!! This is amazing news and not enough good things can be said about how this can help change our society for the better! Good job Jeanne Marie, and thank you!
