(09/23/2019) I have dabbled in scribal arts for 18 years. I *understand* the challenges of creative choices, the hours spent plotting out and drafting, the misery of calligraphy, the backbreaking, hand-cramping labor of painting. Receiving the culmination of such grace and love is humbling. Annais de Montgomerie... You humble me. You inspire me. I am in your debt. Your work is breathtaking, exquisite, and glorious. It is going to the framers TODAY. I have only one complaint: I cannot find your signature on it.

Once, when I was VERY young, Annais asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told her I wanted to be a Zoo keeper, or maybe a race car driver! She asked why not both, and suggested that I ride tortoises! I don’t think she remembers the story of the Tortoise and the Hair.

I met Annais in my first year in the SCA, and we have been friends, rabble-rousers, heralds, and co-conspirators together ever since. She has been my go-to person for help, our council with regards to the College of heralds, and has been invaluable with regards to helping me with several of my heraldic projects.

Annais was fully half of the effort behind my work in creating and running Heralds Professional Development retreat in 2019. She was fully half of the reason we were able to get the event from literally nothing, to fully realized in less than 7 weeks.. Her work as both a herald and a scribe continues to this day.

About 5 years ago, as something of a side project, I started writing title cards for people along the theme of “If I were to introduce you in a book, this is how I would do it”. This is what I wrote for Annais:

“Walking up to you, Annais's presence reflected the different aspects of her. As she closed the distance, it wasn't hard to see the girlish, child like glee in her eyes, the fun-loving, mischievous smile, and hands as likely to fling a breadcrumb as they were to carefully sculpt a calligraphed word. But as she got closer, you quickly realized the whole package was contained in a mountainous presence, the literal big sister tall enough that she could stare down at your bald spot with enough clearance to playfully pat you on the head all at the same time. Small is posture, epic in stature, and fun all around, few could remember ever seeing the big face and bright eyes without a smile.”
