	One Samhain, after the traditional Eldern Hill’s Geas tournament, there was an additional fighting activity thought up by William Lindsey as I recall, for His Excellency Gassion’s entertainment. The intent was to make shields that would easily be destroyed during fighting. But if anyone knows of the handy work of [[William Lindsey]], he does not make things that bring easily. Even when the intent is to do so! I recall that me and [[Charles the Grey of Mooneschadowe]] were the last two left on the list for this particular challenge, to win by breaking the other person’s shield. We first started fighting in the usual manner, but quickly we began to just lay into each others shields with blows as hard as we could. We were eventually punching and slamming against one shield with the other shield, trying to get the edge to split, wood to bust, anything to give. After much effort, which may have included us two-handed swinging shields at each other, Charles was able to chip a measurable piece from my shield, marking him the winner. Mooneschadowe had made the trip to participate in the melees. Before hand, Namron had invited us to crash in on their dinner plans, as long as we brought something to throw on the grill. We do our respective activities at they event, and I may have been a bit punch-drunk from my fighting earlier in the day by the time evening came. Our newbies and the few that did not go offsite to get dinner could smell the fires of other camps starting up to cook. I’m sure I stated with confidence at the time that the lovely aroma of food must be our friends Namron cooking, and surely they are waiting in anticipation for our arrival and for our tribute to the meal. I feel a high degree of regret for not being able to accomplish a great number of goals I had planned. Reflecting on the people and activities we passionately shared, I’m very proud of the legacy I leave behind. I’m extremely honored to know that much of what I’ve learned the last 20 years will continue to be shared. I do regret not being able to receive the honor in person. 	I didn't know Gassion very well, but we camped right next to them at my first Pennsic. We share stories and food through our time there. He was encouraging and always had a story to tell or advice to share. His love for his wife was obvious. 	There is much to be said of HE Gassion de Beaumarchais. Baron, Chivalric Fighter, Rapier Fighter, Cut & Thrust Fighter, Skilled Metal Worker, and more. Yet here is a man who has gone out of his way to help me especially in my first few years of rapier. I was gifted a rapier blade and Gassion made me a hilt. He purposely made it an open hilt so I would learn how to properly defend my sword hand. I was so thrilled and wanted to show my thanks. I offered him a rose yellow of friendship. Later that day he worked with me on parries for what seemed like hours. There has been several other times HE took time out to work with me one-on-one on a specific skill and despite many a bruise later I am a better fighter because of it.
