Þorsteinn was in the service of a local wealthy Hersir named Auðun Einarsson but died raiding before his son’s birth. Ragnhildr, who was also in service to the house of Auðun, died while giving birth to the babe. The women of Auðun’s house took pity on the infant and convinced Auðun to adopt him if he lived. They reasoned the Gods favored hospitality, and thus would be angered should the baby be cast out of a home with resources and means.
