Upon Being Made A Lion

It is taken me a couple of days to start to settle into the idea of the honour bestowed on me Saturday morning. Previous honours typically came with a job that I could get my hands around and take action. When a coronet is put on your head, you must lead your Barony. When a scarf put on your arm, you lead and teach your community. When a collar is put around your neck, if it is white, you lead into a new world, if it has roses, you defend your charge. These things (among many others) have a thoughtful aspect but they also have a physical task that has to be done while your brain is doing it's thing and usually my hands can keep my brain at bay. Defending a Dream is a bit less cerebral and more emotional and finds my mind working overtime.

Lion of Ansteorra was never a club I expected to be a part of. Those guys were heroes and legends. I've gotten the chance to open the OP and read that list of names and it's quiet remarkable. The lineage of my scarf is in there. The first crowns I remember in the SCA are in there along with crowns that I've since served. Beloved Roses, Renowned Bards, and Heralds who's voices I can still hear are in there. Further down the list are good friends that sat Baronial thrones beside me or that I was proud to stand behind. There are friends I see several weekends a year, and legends I see only in my memory. The list is full of people that I love and respect and admire. It will take me some more time to get my head around the idea that my name is now there, too, but I'm am extremely grateful to Christy Lambright and Sven Randullsson for putting it there.

One of the many pieces of (usually unsolicited) advice I give to new landed nobles is to set their version of the dream aside (in fact I think I usually go with "just dash it on the rocks and get it over with" - but to be honest, mine survived the rocks, climbed back up the cliff, and is living happily) and revel in the dream of those that they serve and protect. When you have made yourself responsible for their "Dream", you will be better at your job because you have an investment in them. I chose to protect the "Dream" of the ones I call mine and now the Crown has called me Defender of the Dream and I feel like they have broadened my charge. I will do my best to be sure they can look back at their choice with pride.
I Remain,
Caelan MacRob - Lion of Ansteorra, Defender of the Dream
